Hurricane-Proofing Your HVAC System in Charleston, SC

When you know a hurricane is coming, there are a handful of things you need to do to secure your home and your HVAC system. Here are four tips for making sure that your HVAC system in Charleston, SC, is ready to weather the storm.

1. Cover the Outdoor HVAC System

Your HVAC system’s outdoor unit may be more delicate than you realize. If you’re in the middle of a hurricane, high-speed winds, heavy rain and flying debris can hit your system and cause damage. To prevent this from happening, you may want to consider covering it with a mesh cover. This cover will allow you to continue using your system, but will protect it from leaves, twigs and branches getting inside.

2. Cut the Electricity to HVAC System

Before the storm hits, you should consider turning off your HVAC system and cutting the electricity that’s running to your system to avoid electrical surges. Electrical surges are common during serious storms and can cause damage to your HVAC system that could require costly repairs.

3. Make Your Home Extra Cool

If you lose power during the storm, you won’t be able to use your HVAC system to cool your house down. This is why you should make sure that your home is extra cool before the storm comes. That way, if the power cuts off, you and those you live with won’t can be comfortable for a bit longer.

4. Get Rid of Debris

If there’s anything outside your house that strong winds could pick up, you should put it away immediately. Flying debris can be dangerous if it hits your outdoor unit or any part of your home.
